Much urban design work is undertaken by urban planners, landscape architects, and architects; however, there are some professionals who identify themselves specifically as urban designers. As a traditional design studio, Studio S27 is one of them.

Studio S27 believes strongly in sustainable, smart growth developments. We specialize in the arrangement, appearance and functionality of a place; whether its a picnic pavilion in a park, a three-block streetscape, or a future expansion of a small liberal arts college. It is our goal to provide you with multiple alternatives and phasing to create beautiful places with lasting aesthetic values.

Pattern Books

As a multi-disciplinary Design Studio, Studio S27 specializes in communicating your ideas through the use of Pattern Books. Translating ideas into a concrete plan can often be the most difficult part of bringing a concept to life. All you have to do is talk to anyone who has been on a construction site; almost always the first complaint heard is "No one ever knows exactly what the architect and/or engineer wants."

The purpose of the Pattern Book is to link all participants in the development process to ensure that the proposed vision is translated to the built environment. These participants include the city, developers, engineers, architects, bankers, marketing professionals, the media, and the public. By illustrating the proposed character of new development and areas of proposed redevelopment, the Pattern Book will provide a roadmap for understanding the vision. Engineering decisions and landscape design decisions will be seen in the context of place-making instead of as isolated components. This eliminates months of time for everyone involved in terms of back and forth reviews.

Pattern Books are used for new towns, new neighborhoods, historic districts, towns experiencing rapid growth, and also towns undergoing redevelopment in identified areas. In one document, a detailed understanding of what will be required by developers, engineers, and architects will be available.

Studio S27 believes economic feasibility and ecological responsibility are the two halves of a holistic sustainable design strategy. Our commitment is to help our clients seek out the nexus between building, site, budget, and environment. Being US Green Building Council (USGBC) members we are well versed in the council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
